  • From Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port to Saint-Jean-de-Luz, go by bike to discover the Basque Country and Bearn region. During your cycling week, enjoy the rich historical and cultural heritage by cycling on secured cycle paths and unfrequented roads.

    You discover Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, an essential stop city on the road to Santiago de Compostela. Enter in the heart of the Bearn passing by small traditional villages where you can enjoy the delicious local products. Then, you cycle along the Basque coast and take the "Vélodyssée" that leads you to numerous fishing ports: St-Jean-de-Luz, Bidart, Biarritz…

    At your own pace, discover the various landscapes where Basque culture remains strong.

    A charming character city not far from the French-Spanish border, Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port is at the heart of the Basque region. Discover this lively city, its medieval streets and its local crafts without missing the Saint-Jacques gate, listed in the UNESCO World Heritage.

    From Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, one of the stage towns on the road to Santiago de Compostela, ride up on little countryside roads and admire the wonderful landscapes of Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port and the Aldudes valley. Discover the vineyards of Irouléguy (the smallest AOC of France) planted by the monks of Roncevaux in the 12th century. From small villages and their authentic farms to the Roman city of Saint-Etienne-de-Baïgorry, observe the rich historical and cultural heritage of the region. Your cycle trip ends in Banca which offers you a total change of scene in the surrounding mountainside.

    You leave this small village nestled in the Aldudes valley to join Saint-Étienne-de-Baïgorry. In the middle of pastures, discover beautiful landscapes by wandering narrow mountain roads.

    Your cycle trip ends at the hilltop village of Bidarray which offers you a breathtaking overview on the surrounding mountains.

    From Bidarray you cycle along the Nivelle River to Itxassou. Take time to discover this typical Basque village where you will probably have the opportunity to see basque pelota players on the fronton square. You continue cycling towards the famous city of Espelette. On your way, do not hesitate to make a short break and buy some regional products in the local farms. Once arrived in the pepper capital, stroll through the little streets where dried peppers decorate the façades. You will finish your cycle itinerary in Ainhoa after crossing the Col de Pinodieta.

    From Ainhoa you are now not so far from the French-Spanish border. Pass the old customs office before cycling on the peaceful Spanish roads. You may make a stop in the beautiful village of Zugarramurdi, well-known for its caves and its "Witches’ museum". The roads are lined with slate slabs and the sheep are grazing quietly in the fields… You pass through the traditional village of Sare before crossing the Col de Saint-Ignace. You finally join the Atlantic coast and Saint-Jean-de-Luz where sumptuous houses were built in the neo-Basque style.

    Your itinerary follows the cycle road "Vélodyssée" that leads from Roscoff to Hendaye. You bike on the mythical "route de la corniche" enjoying the beautiful panorama on the cliffs and the Pyrenees range. On your way you will discover numerous places of interest like the castle of Abbadia, built at the end of the 19th century. When you arrive in Hendaye, take the ferry from Hendaye to Hondarribia, with or without your bike. You cycle along the bay of Hendaye and come back to Saint-Jean-de-Luz by train.

    Your cycle itinerary once again follows the "Vélodyssée" along the Atlantic coast, its beaches, its cliffs and waves loved by surfers. On your way look at the luxury hotels and wonderful houses of the Biarritz seaside resort, as well as the town of Guéthary, famous for its sumptuous villas. You follow at your own pace the coastline and then the Adour River before reaching Bayonne. Take time to stroll in the colorful streets of the city and taste the local products such as the Bayonne ham.

    Enjoy the special atmosphere of Bayonne, one of the "Towns of Art and History", and discover its rich historical and culture heritage, such as the fortifications and the citadel, both masterpieces of Vauban. Enjoy the half-timbered houses and the narrow streets with their chocolate makers. Finally, learn about Basque culture at the museum of Bayonne. End of the stay.

    On your arrival day, we provide you with:

    • a touring bike adjusted to your size or a tandem
    • equipped : front rack pack with an integrated file compartment, saddlebag, helmet (on demand), reflective vest, repairing toolkit with patches etc.

    We also provide you with the appropriate equipment for your children : baby seat, bike trailer or trailer bike depending on their age and size.

    Electric bikes are also available for adults.


    Luggage

    Our services include luggage transport in order to let you enjoy your trip comfortably and without stress :
    • We transport your luggage from one accommodation to the next using a private vehicle.
    • Your luggage is directly delivered in your accommodation before you arrive.
    • We provide a saddlebag for the things you shall need during the day.

    Our word of advice : as we know from experience, we strongly recommend you to avoid wearing a backpack during your cycling trip.

    For this trip, we also provide the GPS tracks on demand in the .gpx format at no extra cost.



    Travel documents

    A cycling holiday is the best way to explore a region and discover its culture, landscapes and local traditions.

    Your tour is self-guided to give you the freedom to ride at your own pace. You will be provided all the information you need to enjoy peacefully the itinerary and its interesting sites.
    You will have in your travel documents :
    • a detailed map (A4 format) of the itinerary that we drew at the easiest scale to follow for a bicycle rider
    • a step-by-step description of the itinerary (bound A5 format) giving the direction to follow at each intersection
    • a tourist leaflet containing a brief presentation and useful practical information (opening time, price, contact) about the points of interest along the way

  • To get to departure point:

    • By plane: flight to Bayonne (Biarritz-Anglet-Bayonne airport). Take bus line 14 of the Chronoplus network to reach Bayonne train station (30 min).
    • By train: from Paris-Montparnasse train station, take a direct TGV to Bayonne (5h04) and then a regional train to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port (1h20) (they are currently working on the line between Bayonne and Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port , trains are replaced by buses).     Parking

    If you drive, you can park your vehicule in a car park located outside the walls of Saint-Jean-Pied-Port at a rate of 1.60€/day. The location and contact details of the car park will be given in your travel documents.


    To get back to starting point:

    Regional trains take you back to your starting point if you wish. They are accessible without booking in advance and bicycles are free. You have to buy your ticket on spot (full rate 9.80€/adult). There are several trains per day. You will find the timetable in your travel documents.


    Meeting time:

    The first day is an arrival day without cycling. You arrive whenever you want depending on from where you come. Please note that rooms are usually available in the middle of the afternoon depending on your accommodation. We thank you to advise us if you plan to arrive late.

    “ Le Pays Basque à 360° ”

    Un très beau circuit à découvrir au rythme tranquille du vélo électrique qui aplanit le relief très marqué tout en permettant d'admirer sans fatigue les beaux paysages. Les étapes sont plutôt courtes mais bien calculées. Les vacances, quoi !
