  • From Bayonne to Saint-Jean-de-Luz, bike in the Basque hinterland before reaching the Atlantic coast. Discover the local crafts and Basque culture by crossing the numerous traditional villages in the region. Your itinerary also leads over the "Col de Pinodieta" and "Col de Saint-Ignace" mountain passes, where you will enjoy wonderful views on the sea and the mountains. Do not miss the caves of Sare to become introduced to prehistory and to the megalithic Basque period. Your cycling itinerary ends on the Atlantic coast, on the bike path "Vélodyssée". Cross the French-Spanish border and fully enjoy the bay of Hendaye…

    Bayonne - Espelette

    For the first day, leave the colorful houses of Bayonne to enter in the Basque hinterland. You cycle along the Nive river banks on a cycling path until the city of Ustaritz, a center of Basque culture.

    Then, you ride on small roads to reach Larressore, where you can visit the workshop where makilas (Basque shepherd’s staffs) are manufactured, and the house of famous French writer Edmond Rostand.

    You finally ride through the pepper fields to Espelette, a typical Basque village. Once arrived in the pepper capital, stroll through the little streets where dried peppers decorate the houses.

    Espelette - Sare

    Leave the pepper capital to cross the Col de Pinodieta and reach Ainhoa. From Ainhoa, you are now just a few kilometers away from the French-Spanish boarder. Pass the old customs office before cycling on the peaceful Spanish roads. You may make a stop in the beautiful village of Zugarramurdi, well-known for its caves and its "Witch’s museum". The roads are lined with slate slabs and the sheep are grazing quietly in the fields… You can now join the final stage by making a detour (around 8 kilometers) to discover the caves of Sare. Enjoy the end of the day to discover Sare, one of the “most beautiful villages of France”.

    Sare - Saint-Jean-de-Luz

    This short itinerary allows you to fully enjoy the mountains before biking down the road to the ocean. After riding over the Col de Saint-Ignace, take the Rhune tourist train to get up and enjoy wonderful views of the ocean and the mountains. Have a break in Ascain, a charming village at the foot of Basque mountains where numerous Basque pelota champions grew up. You reach Saint-Jean-de-Luz and its beaches where sumptuous houses were built in the neo-Basque style.

    Day-trip to Hendaye

    Return trip by train
    Your itinerary follows the cycle road "Vélodyssée" that leads from Roscoff to Hendaye. You bike on the mythical "route de la corniche" enjoying the beautiful panorama on the cliffs and the Pyrenees range. On your way you will discover numerous places of interest like the castle of Abbadia, built at the end of the 19th century. When you arrive in Hendaye, take the ferry from Hendaye to Hondarribia, with or without your bike. You cycle along the bay of Hendaye and come back to Saint-Jean-de-Luz by train.

    On your arrival day, we provide you with:

    • a touring bike adjusted to your size or a tandem
    • equipped : front rack pack with an integrated file compartment, saddlebag, helmet (on demand), reflective vest, repairing toolkit with patches etc.

    We also provide you with the appropriate equipment for your children : baby seat, bike trailer or trailer bike depending on their age and size.

    Electric bikes are also available for adults.


    Luggage

    Our services include luggage transport in order to let you enjoy your trip comfortably and without stress :
    • We transport your luggage from one accommodation to the next using a private vehicle.
    • Your luggage is directly delivered in your accommodation before you arrive.
    • We provide a saddlebag for the things you shall need during the day.

    Our word of advice : as we know from experience, we strongly recommend you to avoid wearing a backpack during your cycling trip.

    For this trip, we also provide the GPS tracks on demand in the .gpx format at no extra cost.



    Travel documents

    A cycling holiday is the best way to explore a region and discover its culture, landscapes and local traditions.

    Your tour is self-guided to give you the freedom to ride at your own pace. You will be provided all the information you need to enjoy peacefully the itinerary and its interesting sites.
    You will have in your travel documents :
    • a detailed map (A4 format) of the itinerary that we drew at the easiest scale to follow for a bicycle rider
    • a step-by-step description of the itinerary (bound A5 format) giving the direction to follow at each intersection
    • a tourist leaflet containing a brief presentation and useful practical information (opening time, price, contact) about the points of interest along the way

  • To get to departure point:

    • By plane: flight to Bayonne (Biarritz-Anglet-Bayonne airport). Take bus line C to reach Bayonne city centre (6min).
    • By train: from Paris-Montparnasse station in Paris, take a direct TGV train to Bayonne (5h04) or with a connection in Bordeaux (5h55). To plan your trip, www.raileurope.com.


    Parking

    If you drive, you can park your car in a secure public car park located next to Bayonne train station. The car park offers packages for several days. For your information, the price for 7 days is 35€. The car park is open 7/7 and 24/24. The location and contact details of the car park will be given in your travel documents.


    To get back to starting point:

    Regional trains take you back to your starting point if you wish. They are accessible without booking in advance and bicycles are free. You have to buy your ticket on spot (full rate 5.10€/adult). There are several trains per day. You will find the timetable in your travel documents.

    If you chose the luggage transport, you will be able to pick up your luggage after 5pm at the pick up location.

    Meeting time:

    To tranfer your luggage in the best conditions, we need you to drop off your luggage before 10am. Bikes will be delivered at the same time. Bikes pick up and luggage drop off point is located next to the train station and will be given in your travel documents.

    Pour la deuxième fois on a choisi cette enterprise pour notre séjour et on est ravis. Cette fois le parcours a été personalisé et ça été trés bien organisé : un itinéraire fait juste pour nous! Des hôtels excellentes et des paysages magnifiques. Merci encore!!!!!!!
