  • Itinerary
  • From Bayonne to Saint-Jean-de-Luz, bike in the Basque hinterland before reaching the Atlantic coast. Discover the local crafts and Basque culture by crossing the numerous traditional villages in the region. Your itinerary also leads over the "Col de Pinodieta" and "Col de Saint-Ignace" mountain passes, where you will enjoy wonderful views on the sea and the mountains. Do not miss the caves of Sare to become introduced to prehistory and to the megalithic Basque period. Your cycling itinerary ends on the Atlantic coast, on the bike path "Vélodyssée". Cross the French-Spanish border and fully enjoy the bay of Hendaye…

    Day 1

    Bayonne - Espelette

For the first day, leave the colorful houses of Bayonne to enter in the Basque hinterland. You cycle along the Nive river banks on a cycling path until the city of Ustaritz, a center of Basque culture.

Then, you ride on small roads to reach Larressore, where you can visit the workshop where makilas (Basque shepherd’s staffs) are manufactured, and the house of famous French writer Edmond Rostand.

You finally ride through the pepper fields to Espelette, a typical Basque village. Once arrived in the pepper capital, stroll through the little streets where dried peppers decorate the houses.

    Day 2

    Espelette - Sare

    20 / 29km
Leave the pepper capital to cross the Col de Pinodieta and reach Ainhoa. From Ainhoa, you are now just a few kilometers away from the French-Spanish boarder. Pass the old customs office before cycling on the peaceful Spanish roads. You may make a stop in the beautiful village of Zugarramurdi, well-known for its caves and its "Witch’s museum". The roads are lined with slate slabs and the sheep are grazing quietly in the fields… You can now join the final stage by making a detour (around 8 kilometers) to discover the caves of Sare. Enjoy the end of the day to discover Sare, one of the “most beautiful villages of France”.

    Day 3

    Sare - Saint-Jean-de-Luz

This short itinerary allows you to fully enjoy the mountains before biking down the road to the ocean. After riding over the Col de Saint-Ignace, take the Rhune tourist train to get up and enjoy wonderful views of the ocean and the mountains. Have a break in Ascain, a charming village at the foot of Basque mountains where numerous Basque pelota champions grew up. You reach Saint-Jean-de-Luz and its beaches where sumptuous houses were built in the neo-Basque style.

    Day 4

    Day-trip to Hendaye

    18 / 24km
    Return trip by train
Your itinerary follows the cycle road "Vélodyssée" that leads from Roscoff to Hendaye. You bike on the mythical "route de la corniche" enjoying the beautiful panorama on the cliffs and the Pyrenees range. On your way you will discover numerous places of interest like the castle of Abbadia, built at the end of the 19th century. When you arrive in Hendaye, take the ferry from Hendaye to Hondarribia, with or without your bike. You cycle along the bay of Hendaye and come back to Saint-Jean-de-Luz by train.
