For the part of the itinerary along the Canal du Midi, the boat hauling path being still a dirt track (a lot of roots, the path can be muddy in case of rain), it is sometimes bumpy to ride.

Get ready to discover the south of France and the Canal du Midi!

On this bike tour along the Mediterranean cycle route in Southern France you start in Arles, in the Camargue. But shortly you reach the Camargue with its pink flamingos, herds of wild horses and bulls. Do not miss the visit of Aigues Mortes, its medieval ramparts and its saltworks.

The Mediterranean cycle route leads on dedicated cycle paths along the sand dunes, beaches and the sea shore. The many pink flamingos lead your way first to the vibrant Montpellier then to Sète. This fishing town, exudes a very special atmosphere with all these fishing boats and sea food restaurants.

Your route continues on the Canal du Midi. You ride along the sea through reeds and lagoon before reaching Agde and Béziers. Under the trees lining the canal you ride towards Narbonne.

Day 01
Arrival to Arles

    Arrival in the city of Van Gogh. Enjoy a stroll through its narrow streets to discover the rich Roman and Romanesque heritage and settle into your accommodation during reception hours.

    Arles – Aigues Mortes

    Leave Arles and its beautiful Roman amphitheater to gradually enter the Camargue region and observe the wild horses and pink flamingos. On a beautiful cycle path, you reach the majestic Aigues-Mortes and enjoy an unparalleled view of its 13th century ramparts. Enjoy a nice stroll through its medieval streets and don’t miss visiting the salt marshes of Aigues-Mortes.

    Aigues-Mortes – Montpellier

    Leave the fortified town of Aigues-Mortes on a beautiful cycle path before arriving at Grau-du-Roi. You can also add a detour to Port Camargue, the largest marina in Europe and have relax at the superb Espiguette beach (+14km).You follow the Mediterranean shore and enjoy the beaches and dunes, before reaching the vibrant city of Montpellier.

    Montpellier – Sète

    Leave the beautiful Montpellier behind to set off on a very beautiful cycle path along the river Lez. Enjoy the views on the ponds, the pink flamingos, the horses... This bike paths then leads you directly to the marina of Palavas les Flots.

    Your cycle route continues along the sea shore to Villeneuve-les-Maguelone. Miles of beach, ponds and to top it off, a magnificent cathedral. Saint Pierre and Saint Paul de Maguelone cathedral rises like a stone vessel resting on the sands and ponds with a view of the vineyards!

    Sète – Béziers

    A cycle path takes you from Sète to Marseillan along the Mediterranean beaches, where you can dive to start the day off right! You reach the Onglous lighthouse, where the Canal du Midi reaches the saline waters of the Etang de Thau. From there you follow the Canal du Midi, among the reedbeds of the Bagnas lagoons until Adge. You continue your cycle route along the Canal du Midi and pass by the pretty port of Cassfières as well as the Estagnol marshes before reaching Béziers.

    Béziers-Narbonne

    You start this beautiful day along the Canal du Midi by discovering 2 impressive civil works: the 9 locks of Fonserannes and the tunnel of Malpas. From there you can take a detour on the hill to discover the oppidum of Ensérune and the breathtaking view of the green sun of Montady! A detour through the vineyards and ruins of Fontcalvy brings you to the Canal de la Robine. Afterwards you cycle at your leisure to Narbonne. The canal takes you right into the heart of the Roman city.

    Day 07
    Départ Narbonne

      Your trip ends in Narbonne. Services end after breakfast. Take the opportunity of visiting the city a last time before you leave.

      Beginning of the trip
       

      As the first day is a non-biking day, you’ll arrive at your leisure, depending on your route. Please note that rooms are usually available by mid-afternoon, depending on your accommodation. Please let us know if you are arriving late.

      To get to the departure point

      By plane : Flight to Avignon, Marseille Provence or Nîmes (+regional train)

      By train : The train station of Arles is well connected to the railway network and you can easily access the station from many cities in France and Europe. For instance from Paris: duration 3h55; from Lyon: duration 2h30; from Marseille: duration 49 min. To plan your trip: thetrainline. 

      Car park

      If you drive to Arles, you can park your car for free in the car park P6 at Arles train station.

      The location and contact details of the car parks will be given in your travel documents.

      To reach back the starting point

      You take the regional train if you want to return to your starting point. The trains are without reservation and accept bikes for free. The ticket is to be taken on site (full price 23€/adult approximately). There are several trains during the day. You will find the timetables in your travel documents.
