Cycling around the Arcachon Bay: an invigorating trip

  • Arcachon Bay cycling paths provide you with a great choice of nice destinations in the area: the oyster-farming village of Gujan Mestras, the wide sand beaches, the great dune of Pyla or the fragrant pine forest next to the dunes.


    Arcachon bateliers can also give you a boat ride to Cap Ferret, where you can wander to see the oyster-fishing huts in their lively and contrasted colors and the awesome view on the bay. In the culture field, do not miss Arcachon Winter Town and admire the typical architecture of the villas.

    To the Great Dune of Pilat and the ocean

    On this route, you’ll ride along the coastline and dunes towards the Dune of Pilat. Take time to sunbath on the beach or enjoy a dip in the ocean water.

    Suggested day trip : Lac de Cazaux

    Bike towards the dune of Pyla and leave the beautiful city of Arcachon behind. Cross the beautiful pine forest on a small slightly hilly country road and reach the impressive lake of Cazaux. The bike tour back to Arcachon is on a very flat bike path.

    Learn about oyster farming from dedicated oyster farmers in Gujan Mestras and sample the freshest oysters you’ll ever taste! The Leyre Delta is where fresh waters of the river and the salty waters of the ocean meet. You can go bird watching or rent a canoe or kayak and explore the area or water.

    Cap-Ferret

    Boat ride
    Cross by boat the Arcachon Bay to admire the best view on the basin where you see the Great Dune of Pyla emerges under the changing light. The Cap-Ferret is a nature reserve in which you can cycle easily thanks to many well signaled cycle paths and quiet small roads.

    On your arrival day, we provide you with:

    • a touring bike adjusted to your size or a tandem
    • equipped : front rack pack with an integrated file compartment, saddlebag, helmet (on demand), reflective vest, repairing toolkit with patches etc.

    We also provide you with the appropriate equipment for your children : baby seat, bike trailer or trailer bike depending on their age and size.

    Electric bikes are also available for adults (+1m55).

    You can of course also bring your own bikes, in this case a reduction will be applied (see the Tarif tab)


    Travel documents

    A cycling holiday is the best way to explore a region and discover its culture, landscapes and local traditions.

    Your tour is self-guided to give you the freedom to ride at your own pace. You will be provided all the information you need to enjoy the itinerary and its points of interests.

    Our documentation contains a very detailed description of the itinerary. No matter how you usually navigate, you will find your way thanks to our comprehensive guidance material including:
    • a roadbook with maps that we drew at the easiest scale to follow on a bike
    • a roadbook with step-by-step description giving the direction to follow at each intersection and highlighting the points of interest

    Our GPS App

    For this trip, you can also use our smartphone app featuring GPS guidance (without extra fee).

    You will find in the app all the information given in the map and step-by-step roadbooks. You will be located on the itinerary with the GPS device of your phone. The route and directions to follow will be both viewable on the screen of your phone and announced aloud. As you ride along the itinerary, you will be given information about visits, restaurants, services and useful alerts on the way.

    -> You need to have a smartphone and download Le Velo Voyageur app on your Apple or Android store before the trip. All details concerning the downloading and the use of the application will be given after we have confirmed the booking and the balance is paid. Once the trip is downloaded, the GPS guidance can be used off-line.
  • Practical information
  • To get to the departure point:

    • By plane: flight to Bordeaux and then regional train (50 minutes) to Arcachon.
    • By train: From Paris-Montparnasse rail station, take a TGV train to Bordeaux, then change for a regional train to Arcachon. The duration of the trip is about 4h30. To plan your trip, https://www.sncf-connect.com/


    Parking

    If you drive to Arcachon, you can park your car at your hotel where parking is free (not bookable places) or in the surrounding streets near the Place de Verdun, very safe because the police station is located around the corner.


    Meeting time:

    You pick your bike in a shop near your accomodation. You arrive whenever you want, depending on where you come from. Please note that the shop is open Mondays to Sundays from 9.30am to 12.30pm.

    Nous sommes très satisfaits : - accueil à l'hôtel très agréable et servie très prévenant ; - le prestataire vélo a été très professionnel et très aimable ; - les vélos étaient d'excellente qualité, bien équipés, et bien réglés ; - les circuits étaient à la fois très variés, très pittoresques et souvent très dépaysants ; - l'application était simple d'utilisation et très efficace. Nous recommandons vivement tant le séjour que la prestation globale de la société.

    Arcachon en roue libre

    Une belle façon de découvrir Arcachon, Gujan Mestras et le Cap Ferret à partir d'Arcachon. Les boucles proposées peuvent se combiner, elles permettent à la fois la découverte de beaux espaces, comme la dune du Pilat, mais aussi de déguster les productions des ostréiculteurs. La topographie de la région rend les ballades plutôt faciles.

    Pour une première expérience en randonnée vélo, le constat est très positif. Grâce au Vélo Voyageur nous avons pu profiter de trois jours exceptionnels tant sur la qualité de l'hébergement, la restauration et l'organisation du séjour. Nous n'avons eu qu'à pédaler et profiter des paysages qui nous entouraient. Bref, de vraies vacances que l'on compte reconduire dans d'autres régions. Merci à toute l'équipe.

Prenez des forces pour la journée "Tour du bassin" en dégustant de délicieuses huitres en chemin! Hâte de remonter à vélo avec vous!
