From Toulouse to Carcassonne with the whole family
This family cycle trip takes you along the Canal du Midi from Toulouse to Carcassonne. You ride at your own pace from lock to lock and discover the ingenious construction structures built by Paul Riquet. The daily distances are short, allowing you to cycle slowly and rest when you arrive at your daily stop. You leave Toulouse on a cycle path along the canal and keep on cycling through the Lauragais area via Montesquieu-Lauragais, Avignonet-Lauragais and the Narouze continental divide line before reaching Castelnaudary. You then head to the village on Saint-Papoul on low-traffic country roads before finding the canal again, that you follow till Carcassonne. You will be rewarded with stunning views of the medieval walls !
Be careful : the towpath being still a single track on several portions (between Bram and Carcassonne), it is sometimes a bit bumpy to ride and the path can be narrow.

You leave Toulouse on a cycle route along the Canal du Midi and leave the city in peace and quiet, lulled by the gentle lapping of the water. You will reach the first villages of the Lauragais region, whose bell towers dot the landscape, especially in Montesquieu-Lauragais.

You leave the canal to ride on a nice overhanging road offering magnificent views on the canal and countryside. You reach the Cathar village of Avignonet-Lauragais before passing by Port Lauragais and the watershed between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean sea. You then head towards Castelnaudary, where you will be warmly welcomed with a tasty cassoulet on the nice port.

Today's route takes you first through the backcountry of Castelnaudary on small country roads. The itinerary has some gentle slopes but is asphalted contrary to the hauling path. You go through the village of Saint-Papoul where we advise to take a look at the abbey. You continue further down back to the canal. You ride at a slow pace on the dirt path used as a tow path in the past. You reach Bram and its charming marina.

Today you stay on the towpath of the canal to Carcassonne. You will cross the new town and arrive on the banks of the Aude, where the impressive walls of the medieval city stand out. Take time to visit this fortress admirably restored by Viollet-le-Duc.
The towpath sometimes turns into a muddy track until you reach Carcassonne. We suggest a pleasant detour on country roads passing through the villages of Alzonne and Sainte-Eulalie, recommended in case of rain.
The entry to the "Cité", the old city of Carcassonne is free. To visit the castle, you need an entry ticket (adults only). Explore one of the largest fortified towns in Europe, and one of the best conserved thanks to the restoration work carried out by Viollet-le-Duc in the 19th century.
