From Arles to Sète, the Mediterranean cycle route has you discover in 4 days the Camargue and the Mediterranean coast. Enjoy the ride on beautiful cycle paths along the sea and ponds and on small country roads through the Camargue, where you can observe pink flamingos, wild horses and bulls.
You start the itinerary in Arles, which inspired the paintings of Van Gogh and renowned for its Roman ruins. Continue cycling through the countryside before reaching Aigues-Mortes and its historic ramparts. The cycle route continues on the Mediterranean cycle route, along the ponds to reach the Camargue region. You will then pedal along the seafront enjoying the gentle spray of the Mediterranean Sea before arriving in Montpellier. Continue along the shore to end your beautiful short-trip with a seafood dish on the fishing port of Sète.

Day 01

Arrival to Arles

Arrival in the city of Van Gogh. Enjoy a stroll through its narrow streets to discover the rich Roman and Romanesque heritage and settle into your accommodation during reception hours.

Day 02

Arles – Aigues Mortes

Leave Arles and its beautiful Roman amphitheater to gradually enter the Camargue region and observe the wild horses and pink flamingos. On a beautiful cycle path, you reach the majestic Aigues-Mortes and enjoy an unparalleled view of its 13th century ramparts. Enjoy a nice stroll through its medieval streets and don’t miss visiting the salt marshes of Aigues-Mortes.

Day 03

Aigues-Mortes – Montpellier

Leave the fortified town of Aigues-Mortes on a beautiful cycle path before arriving at Grau-du-Roi. You can also add a detour to Port Camargue, the largest marina in Europe and have relax at the superb Espiguette beach (+14km).You follow the Mediterranean shore and enjoy the beaches and dunes, before reaching the vibrant city of Montpellier.

Day 04

Montpellier – Sète

Leave the beautiful Montpellier behind to set off on a very beautiful cycle path along the river Lez. Enjoy the views on the ponds, the pink flamingos, the horses... This bike path then leads you directly to the marina of Palavas-les-Flots.

Your cycle route continues along the sea shore to Villeneuve-les-Maguelone. Miles of beach, ponds and to top it off, a magnificent cathedral. Saint-Pierre-and-Saint-Paul-de-Maguelone cathedral rises like a stone vessel resting on the sands and ponds with a view of the vineyards!

Equipment for your cycling trip

For this trip, bicycles are equipped with 2 waterproof saddle bags with a 10 to 20 L capacity each to carry your luggage. Do not forget to put your items in a soft travel bag to be able to place it easily in your saddle bags.

For more comfort, you can choose to add luggage transport in your booking:

We transport your luggage from one accommodation to the next using a private vehicle.
Your luggage is directly delivered in your accommodation before you arrive.
We provide a saddlebag for the things you'll need during the day (included in your bike rental).
We advise you to take an extra set of clothes with you if you expect to arrive before 5 p.m. at your accommodation.

Our word of advice : as we know from experience, we strongly recommend you to avoid wearing a backpack during your cycling trip.

On your arrival day, we provide you with:

a touring bike adjusted to your size;

equipped : front panier, a saddlebag (or two if the luggage transportation is not included), helmet (on demand), reflective vest, complete repairing toolkit.

We also offer on this trip :

For this trip, you can also use our smartphone app featuring GPS guidance (without extra fee). You will find in the app all the information given in the map and step-by-step roadbooks. You will be located on the itinerary with the GPS device of your phone. The route and directions to follow will be both viewable on the screen of your phone and announced aloud. As you ride along the itinerary, you will be given information about visits, restaurants, services and useful alerts on the way. -> You need to have a smartphone and download Le Velo voyageur app on your Apple or Android store before the trip. All details regarding the download and use of the app will be given after we have confirmed the booking and the balance is paid. Once the trip is downloaded, the GPS guidance can be used off-line.

A cycling holiday is the best way to explore a region and discover its culture, landscapes and local traditions.

Your tour is self-guided to give you the freedom to ride at your own pace. You will be provided with all the information you need to enjoy the itinerary and its points of interests. We can send printed travel documents (extra cost of €15 for printing and postage, in France only), which include:

a roadbook with maps that we drew at the easiest scale to follow on a bike;
a roadbook with step-by-step description giving the direction to follow at each intersection and highlighting the points of interest.

Information

Beginning of the trip

As the first day is a non-biking day, you’ll arrive at your leisure, depending on your route. Please note that rooms are usually available by mid-afternoon, depending on your accommodation. Please let us know if you are arriving late.

To get to the departure point

By plane: flight to Avignon, Marseille Provence or Nîmes conditions.

By train: The train station of Arles is well connected to the railway network and you can easily access the station from many cities in France and Europe. Car park

To get back to the departure point

You take the regional train if you wish to return to your starting point. Trains do not require reservations and accept bicycles free of charge. Tickets must be purchased on the spot (full fare approx. €18/adult). There are several trains during the day. You will find the timetables in your travel documents.
