A family cycling holiday on the ViaRhôna

Are you looking for a change of scenery and searching for a well-balanced bike trip for young and old alike? This bike trip on the ViaRhôna route is made for you!

Begin cycling in Seyssel, a village from the French Savoy region located on the left bank of the magnifient Rhône, which will be your central theme for your holidays. Far from being monotonous, riding along the river and its meanders will amaze you! Discover a lush vegetation and typical villages where you will learn some crafts from the artisans and enjoy entertaining visits.

Ride at your own pace on a well-equipped and secured cycle path and on small countryside roads which are neatly chosen. You will have plenty of time to enjoy the numerous swimming sites!

You reach Lyon crossing the Miribel park, one of the largest metropolitan park of Europe and the one of « Tête d’Or » with its orange grove and it zoo. What an incredible family cycling adventure!

Program

Day 01
Arrival in Seyssel

    In Seyssel, discover the Rhône acting as a border between Ain and Haute-Savoie regions. The history of the town is intimately linked to the river especially through the inland waterways.
    Do not miss the visit of Maison du Haut-Rhône: you will learn more about the history of the town and the river, your travel companion along this itinerary.

     
    Day 02
    Seyssel – Belley 38km

      Following the ViaRhôna cycle path, you ride alongside the river and discover a wild countryside up to Chanaz. Take the time to discover the know-how of the different craftsmen and women and enjoy the numerous activities of this old harbour located along the canal of Savière.
      You follow then the secured cycling path raising your eyes to heaven to observe the wading birds and arrive in Belley, the capital of the Bugey region.

       
      Day 03
      Belley – Champagneux 23/31km

        Today you will meet two Rhône rivers, the channeled and the wild one. At their junction, raise your head to admire the Chartreuse of Pierre Châtel, a former monastery from the 16th century. Cross the bridge of Virignin which is specially fitted out for cyclists and change of French region.
        You reach Champagneux and have the opportunity to continue your way to Saint-Genix-sur-Guiers, nicknamed the "city of the cake". For gourmets, this town is famous for its brioche topped with pralines, yummy!

         
        Day 04
        Champagneux – Morestel 34km

          Today is a swimming day! Follow the Rhône that leads you to the artificial lake of Cuchet for a refreshing moment. Then, cross the river to arrive in Glandieu, a village located at the bottom of a mountain range: an impressive 60-meter high waterfall awaits you!
          Ride a bit more to reach Morestel, a historical and charming village.

           
          Day 05
          Morestel – Crémieu

          At Le Vélo voyageur, we like to give you the choice! Two itineraries are possible today:

           

          - the short option: a short break in your epic journey? Or simply the desire to enjoy the quietness of your accommodation a little longer? The short option is almost entirely on a path dedicated to soft modes of transports. You will arrive quickly in Crémieu, which leaves you plenty of time to visit this medieval city, one of the most beautiful villages in France.

           

           

          - the long option: you have an itchy calf? Then take the ViaRhôna route which will take you to the Vallée Bleue leisure center before leading you to the Grottes de la Balme, one of the seven wonders of the Dauphiné. Small country roads will then take you to Crémieu, a village that's an invitation to travel!

          Day 06
          Crémieu – Villette d’Anthon 30km

            After a last walk on the ramparts, get onto your bike to reach Villette d’Anthon! Cycle through the countryside before noticing that the landscapes are evolving and becoming more and more urban, Lyon is not far from here!
            You reach your daily stop and your accomodation with a swimming-pool: a nice way to enjoy life, isn’t it ?

             
            Day 07
            Villette d’Anthon – Lyon 38km

              Beginning from Villette d’Anthon, you reach quickly the cycle path and the Rhone, your faithful travel partner.
              You will then enjoy a fabulous bike ride on the banks of the Rhône. You have plenty of choices to relax and swim into the Miribel park, one of the largest metropolitan park of Europe. After a few kilometers, you arrive in the capital of the Gauls!

               
              Day 08
              Departure from Lyon

                Get lost in the traboules, the traditional passages that allow you to go from one building to another. Sit down in a Lyonnais "bouchon" to discover the famous local gastronomy. You can leave whenever you want after breakfast or extend your stay to enjoy the city.

                Beginning of the trip
                 

                As the first day is a non-biking day, you’ll arrive at your leisure, depending on your route. Please note that rooms are usually available by mid-afternoon, depending on your accommodation. Please let the accommodation know if you are arriving late.

                To get to the departure point

                By plane: flight to Lyon or Geneva.

                 

                By train: regional TER train from Lyon-Part-Dieu (approx. 1h) or from Geneva-Cornavin (town-centre, approx. 45min) to Seyssel-Corbonod. To plan your trip : https://www.thetrainline.com

                Car park

                If you drive to Seyssel, you can park your car directly in a free public car park close to your accommodation for the duration of your stay. .

                To get back to the starting point

                Regional TER trains run every hour from Lyon-Part-Dieu to Seyssel-Corbonod (approx. 1h).
