From Buffon to Chalon-sur-Saône
You begin your bike trip along the Canal de Bourgogne. From Montbard to Dijon, you take alternatively the cycle path of the canal and low-traffic country roads, along which you will find some gems of the Burgundy heritage: Fontenay Abbey, Alesia Museum or Commarin castle. You visit the medieval town of Semur-en-Auxois but also the vibrant Dijon, a hotspot of the French gastronomy.
The second part of your bike holiday is on the Burgundy wine route. You roam the Côte de Nuits vineyard passing by Clos Vougeot and Nuits Saint Georges to Beaune. You cycle further on the Voie des Vignes cycle route before finding the side of another canal, Canal du Centre, to Chalon-sur-Saône.

Get started along the Canal du Bourgogne. Enjoy at your own pace some gems of the Burdundy heritage which are along the itinerary of today. At the beginning of the day, you can make a first detour to the abbey of Fontenay, the oldest remaining Cistercian abbey in the world. A bit later in Venarey, you leave the canal once again and head to Alésia, a famous battle site where the famous Gaul, Vercingetorix, beat the Romans. You continue your discovery in the village of Flavigny sur Onzerain and its fabric of traditional anises, a widespread delicacy in the past! You take country roads to reach your overnight place, Semur on Auxois surronded by well-preserved medieval walls.

Continue to relax on your bike, surrounded by the scenic countryside of Burdundy. You ride along canal and river to Pouilly en Auxois. There are again many opportunities to stop for a cultural break further on the route. In Commarin, step in the 14th century castle which is richly decorated and furnished. In Châteauneuf, after a rather steep climb, you will be rewarded by a nice stroll through the medieval streets and the castle, which have allowed Châteauneuf on the "nicest villages of France" list. On a hot day, you can also drag on the beach of the lake of Panthier.

Goodbye Auxois country and hello Ouche valley! You go along the peaceful Burgundy canal and discover typical Burgundy hamlets. Stop for a gourmet break at the lively locks. You arrive in Dijon, after having passed the Kir lake, ideal to refresh yourself or to see the sailing boats passing by. Then enjoy the sweetness of regional life and don't miss the visit of the Dukes of Burgundy Palace.

You leave Dijon riding through Chenôve where you can stop at the Dukes of Burgundy’s wine presses, before cycling on small roads through the vineyards of the Côte de Nuits. You will pass the vineyards of all most prestigious wines of Burgundy: Gevrey-Chambertin, Vosne-Romanée, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Ladoix-Serrigny. You also pass the vineyard of Vougeot. Enter and discover the traditions of the Knights of Tastevin, who protects the quality of Burgundy wines. Take the time to taste the different wines before reaching Beaune, the capital of winetrading known for its famous Hospices.

You ride on the Voie des Vignes cycle route, which meanders on the hillside of the Côte de Beaune vineyards. You cycle on the small paths used by the wine growers to tend their vines, with stunning views on the villages nested in the vineyards. On your way, you pass Meursault, featured in a classic French film with the actor Louis de Funès entitled La Grande Vadrouille. You meet the top-end wine appellations of Pommard, Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet. In Chagny, the decor changes: you are riding along the quiet waters of Canal du Centre on a flat cycle path to Chalon sur Saône.

Beginning of the trip
As the first day is a non-biking day, you’ll arrive at your leisure, depending on your route. Please note that rooms are usually available by mid-afternoon, depending on your accommodation. Please let us know if you are arriving late.
If you come by train, we are happy to offer you the taxi transfer from Montbard train station to Buffon (included).
To get to the departure point
By plane : flight to Paris and train until Montbard.

If you choose to drive, you will be able to park your car for the whole duration of the trip at you accommodation’s parking.
To reach back the starting point
Train : Regional direct trains take you back to Montbard, duration : 1h30 to 2h30. Then, we are happy to offer the taxi transfer from Montbard train station to Buffon to take back your car.
