From Chalon to Dijon, for a complete adventure
This 10-day trip in the heart of Burgundy will please both cycle enthusiasts and travellers in search of peacefulness. Castles, abbeys but also renowned vineyards and canal are the main components of this large tour of Burgundy. Every new day is an adventure!
You discover typical cities and villages of the region such as Cluny, Dracy or Beaune and its hospices. What Burgundy would taste without its local specialities and wines? Ride through the vineyards and stop for a wine tasting, you have the choice: Pommard, Montrachet, Gevrey-Chambertin, etc.
The daily steps have been planned so as to cycle peacefully onto the bike paths and countryside roads and enjoy the treasures of the region as well as your accomodation!

Free time of arrival in Chalon, check-in at your accommodation during reception hours. Discover the historical center in the heart of which stands the amazing Saint-Vincent cathedral. Then stroll along the banks of the Saône to enjoy the view of the bridge and the Saint-Laurent island. Châlon is also the birthplace of photography, whose fascinating history will be told to you at the Nicéphore Niepce museum.

You will leave Chalon by the banks of the Saône and then take small country roads through the villages. Take time to visit Tournus, its medieval streets, its Saint-Philibert abbey, masterpiece of the first Romanesque art, and its Hôtel Dieu-Musée Greuze.

You continue along the Saône by taking the bicycle path built on the old towpaths. Enjoy the quietness and the bucolic landscapes of the banks of the Saône. In Mâcon, admire the Saint-Laurent bridge from the quays. The city has a varied heritage, including the Saint-Pierre church, the Maison de Bois and the Musée des Ursulines, which presents the local history as well as an art collection.

You leave Mâcon and quickly find the bicycle path in the middle of the vineyards of Mâconnais. A detour is possible to the birth house of Lamartine, omnipresent in the local memory. Stop in Berzé-la-Ville to marvel at the medieval frescoes of the Chapelle des Moines, before entering the Bois Clair tunnel at the foot of the majestic fortress of Berzé-le-Châtel, the longest tunnel in Europe reserved for cyclists. The greenway continues to Cluny. Don't miss the visit of the abbey's remains to plunge back into the splendors of the most powerful monastic order of the medieval West.

You continue gently on the greenway. The itinerary takes you past the castle of Cormatin, a must-see for its 17th century mural paintings, unique in France, then continues through varied landscapes, alternating between forests, fields and vineyards. Stop in the villages of Buxy, Givry or Dracy-le-Fort and don't miss the opportunity to taste Burgundy wines.

Take a trip to discover the vineyards of the Côte Chalonnaise. The itinerary leads you first to the castle of Germolles, the best preserved residence of the Dukes of Burgundy where a visit is a must. You will then reach Mercurey and its world famous wines before strolling through the countryside and the Burgundy vineyards. Take a little height (magnificent view guaranteed) before reaching Jambles then Givry, which will delight the finest gourmets !

Drive quietly on the towpath of the Canal du Centre until Santenay. A small detour to visit the castle of Rully is also possible (+6kms). You then pass definitely on the vineyard side by borrowing the spectacular way of the vineyards of the coast of Beaune which curves on the slopes of mythical naming such as Chassagne-Montrachet or Puligny-Montrachet and you arrive at Meursault. A real pleasure !

You continue on the royal road of the vineyards passing Pommard before entering Beaune, whose prosperity is largely due to the wine trade. Take the time to stroll through the narrow streets of the city center before visiting the Hospices de Beaune, which is not to be missed. The museum retraces very well the history of these places from the 15th century to nowadays. You will then go back to the vineyard to sleep in Nuits Saint Georges or one of the surrounding villages.

Today you will discover the vineyards of the Côte de Nuits and its century-old traditions. Your itinerary leads you to the doors of the Clos Vougeot castle, a highly symbolic place founded by the monks of the Cîteaux Abbey. The visit will enlighten you on the architecture of the place but also on the rites of the brotherhood of the Knights of Tastevin. You continue to Dijon, former capital of the powerful Dukes of Burgundy. This lively city welcomes you warmly in its remarkably preserved pedestrian center.
Described as the "city of a hundred steeples" by François I, Dijon was the capital of the powerful Dukes of Burgundy. The city has thus inherited architectural jewels such as the Palace of the Dukes of Burgundy, the Church of Notre Dame with its famous sculpted owl or the mansions of the old Dijon. The city is also a gastronomic stopover rich in specialties such as gingerbread, crème de cassis, nonettes or the famous mustard.
